Johnny Depp teams with Cooper, Maltin in Santa Barbara

Johnny Depp took home the Maltin Modern Master Award at the 31st annual Santa Barbara International Film Festival Thursday and sat down to discuss his colorful career — one that spans “21 Jump Street,” “Who’s Eating Gilbert Grape?” “Edward Scissorhands,” several “Pirates of the Carribean” films, and, in 2015, “Black Mass.” Scott Cooper, director of “Black Mass,” based on the book by former Globe reporters Dick Lehr and Gerard O’Neill, presented Depp with the award and film critic Leonard Maltin queried Depp about his twisty career path. Depp played Boston mobster James “Whitey” Bulger in the film, a figure he told Variety in January he’d long been “fascinated” with. Next up for Depp: Taking the Grammy Awards stage Feb. 15 with Aerosmith’s Joe Perry, Alice Cooper, and other members of the Hollywood Vampires to pay tribute to late Motorhead frontman Lemmy Kilmister.

If this is really the new Doom box art, it sucks

Who cares about the hero?
Conan O'Brien will be playing the latest iteration of Doom on his show's Clueless Gamer segment tonight with some players of the sports ball who are in the big game. In a tweet promoting the show, the box art below was shown, though it hasn't been confirmed as the final retail version just yet.

Let's hope this isn't the final box art, because it is awful. Just look at that generic space marine with the gross Doom 2016 piss-colored filter. Yuck.
Take a look at the original Doom's box art from 1993 in the gallery below. It still holds up; the hero looks like a badass, the enemies are bright and scary, and it drives home that you're a guy trapped in hell fighting demons, and the guy in the bottom left corner is giving you fuck-me eyes.
What kind of message does this new box art send to consumers? To me, it says "You're a generic soldier guy walking through piss clouds." If Doom weren't already a household name and this were the first game in the series, I doubt this cover would catch many eyes. It certainly wouldn't have gotten the attention the original did from six-year-old me.

PC/PS4/PS3 CrossPlay Now Available In DC Universe Online; Here’s How It Works

A few weeks ago, Daybreak Games (previously known as Sony Online Entertainment) announced that DC Universe Online would soon feature CrossPlay between PC, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3 platforms.
That day has finally come, the studio announced in a press release. Here’s how it’s all going to work (for instance, there won’t be CrossBuy or character transfer options).
DCUO players on PC and PS now play together with cross play! When you log in today, you will seamlessly be playing with players on the opposite platform, including in groups, in leagues, in On Duty content, and in the open world. We hope you will enjoy the new faces you’ll meet, and the freedom to play with virtually anyone or everyone else (in your region) who plays DCUO.
Q: What is cross play?
A: Cross play will allow all players on PC, PS3, and PS4 to play together as if they were on the same servers. In game, the transition will be essentially seamless. The biggest thing you will notice is more players around.
Q: Does cross play mean I can play my characters on PC and PS?
A: No. The accounts remain separate, and your characters remain attached to your PC or PS accounts.
Q: Do my purchases transfer to the other platform?
A: No. The accounts remain separate, and your characters remain attached to your PC or PS accounts.
Q: Can I transfer my characters from one platform to another?
A: No. We do not plan to offer character transfers of any kind, for business and technical reasons.
Q: Can we be in groups and leagues together?
A: Yes, after cross play launches, groups and leagues will both be able to contain a mixture of PC, PS3, and PS4 players.
