Johnny Depp teams with Cooper, Maltin in Santa Barbara
Johnny Depp took home the Maltin Modern Master Award at the 31st annual Santa Barbara International Film Festival Thursday and sat down to discuss his colorful career — one that spans “21 Jump Street,” “Who’s Eating Gilbert Grape?” “Edward Scissorhands,” several “Pirates of the Carribean” films, and, in 2015, “Black Mass.” Scott Cooper, director of “Black Mass,” based on the book by former Globe reporters Dick Lehr and Gerard O’Neill, presented Depp with the award and film critic Leonard Maltin queried Depp about his twisty career path. Depp played Boston mobster James “Whitey” Bulger in the film, a figure he told Variety in January he’d long been “fascinated” with. Next up for Depp: Taking the Grammy Awards stage Feb. 15 with Aerosmith’s Joe Perry, Alice Cooper, and other members of the Hollywood Vampires to pay tribute to late Motorhead frontman Lemmy Kilmister.
